With the festival season fast approaching its time to start planning your wardrobe. Out are all the summer shoes (for the weekend anyway) and in are wellington boots, but how to look ultra cool in wellies? mmmm

Dr Martens Turn 50 & Release Some Music To Celebrate!

Dr Martens iconic 1460′s classic range have turned 50 and to celebrate this Dr Martens have decided to release some classic tunes covered by modern artists. The idea is to release 10 “cult classic tracks which represent the spirit of the people who’ve worn DMs over the past 50 years.”

The first three releases have included Noisettes‘ version of the Buzzcocks‘ Ever Fallen in Love with Someone You Should’n't’ve, The Duke Spirit‘s take on Sham 69‘s If the Kids Are United and DaM-FunK‘s cover of a Human League song, Things That Dreams Are Made Of.

Upcoming covers include The Raveonettes‘ version of The Stone Roses‘ I Wanna Be Adored and covers of The Runaways‘ Cherry Bomb and Neneh Cherry‘s Buffalo Stance.

Dr Martens have been a major part of American history dating back to the 1960’s. The Dr Marten shoe came about in Munich Germany in 1945. Dr. Klaus Maertens had a skiing accident and he injured his foot, as a result he decided to make a show that was comfortable and would help his foot to heal. He created a shoe with an air cushioned sole. He used rubber from old rubber tires to get the affect. He and his friend Dr. Herbert Funck developed the shoe and started selling the shoe in Germany. In 1959 they created a company that manufactured the shoe and by 1960 a boot was created with the air cushioned insole.

Cultures Affected by Dr Martens

The name Dr Maertens was anglicized for America and reamed Dr Martens. Many cultures have been affected by the shoe. The Mods, Skin heads, Punk, Rockers, Goth, Grunge, psychobilly and SKA’s. These are some of the major youth movements of subculture that brought the Dr Martens to full world renowned recognition. The mods began in the soho clubs in London along with the skin heads with their ant-fashion culture of the working class and reggae undertones. The punk group emerged in 1975 with their anti-establishment message and anti-mainstream culture. In the 70’s and 80’s the cultures migrated to the Goth look of everything black and the grunge look of thrift store outfits like long green parkas and ripped shirts with black jeans. The psychobillies were the hard core cult like subculture and the SKA were the inner city kids from a Jamaican background.
Conclusion

Dr Martens also labeled Doc martens have been a part of youth cultures and movements since the mid 60’s. They have been along for the ride through the punk phase, the Goth phase the grunge phase and the rocker phase. Dr Martens have seen a surge of interest as the subculture changes. The fashion trend is slowly moving back into the 60’s and 70’s and the look of the Dr Martens is coming back. There are more styles and more models that are coming out that will definitely keep up with the youth subculture movement and they will make a statement.

I have read much over the previous months regarding the fact that Dr Martens are now making a huge fashion comeback and it is plain to see that this is slowly happening and nowhere more so than in Hollywood amongst the new generation of A listed celebrities.

Almost every fashion blog in the world have already in 2010 reviewed or commented in one form or another on Dr Martens, their colorful history or celebrities wearing them. This time it is not the bands or sub-culture bringing them into the mix but young fashion conscious females looking for the rock chic image without the rock star baggage.

So which Dr Martens are they wearing? what Dr Martens should you buy?

When researching the Dr Martens styles currently being worn by the rich & famous i have to fully admit to being a little shell-shocked by what i discovered. It is not the ultra modern designs that i expected but the original designs – albeit sometimes with a modern twist (bright colors etc).

Here’s a great preview of what to expect from Dr Martens this autumn (I know it is early). Some absolutely great designs however i think personally it is the Chukka boots that do it for me. A few trends including that of the white sole have been incorporated to great effect.

All boots definitely worthy of the DM name.

After a few requests for Kids Dr Martens we have decided to add the children’s Dr Martens Boot & Shoe range to Martins Boots. You can find the section Here.

The children’s range is fairly comprehensive and we will continue to add more as and when we can. Unfortunately for the time being we have both the boys and girls boots together but will hopefully create separate sections in the near future.

We all remember our first pair of DM’s and most had them as children, so it only makes sense that they are included.

Dr Martens are often thought of as a mans brand, however it was woman that first caught onto the benefits of this iconic boot. When Dr Martens were first released in Germany over 80% of the sales were housewivover the age of 40. These housewives had quickly caught on to the fact that the boots were long lasting and comfortable. It was not until the end of the first decade of trading that others would start to wear the boots.

Dr Martens are now once again chasing the lady customers as they start to design more and more new boots, shoes and sandals for fashionable females. Martins Boots certainly receives more sales and inquiries from women than their male counterparts.

So why are Dr Marten Boots such a fashion statement for ladies? or are they popular because they are not a fashion statement?

Personally i believe that Dr Martens are popular amongst women for a number of reasons, some of which have been evident ever since there first release.

So Dr Martens have now ventured into the computer generated world of Band Hero. In Band Hero the next installment of Guitar Hero you can customize your clothing and select your type of Dr Martens.

And in a bazaar twist that mixes reality and virtual reality a little further you can now buy these in real life. Dr Martens have managed to confuse me one again.

Dr Martens have updated their designs while also keeping their classic ranges but i have to say i am really looking forward to seeing this new range adorning the shop shelves.
